Address SDGs 14:

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

This SDG is mainly taking place in Pacific Small Island Developing States, where more than three billion people’s livelihood, economy, and culture are closely linked and highly affected by the health of the oceans. In trying to maintain its sustainability, SDG 14 has developed seven more specific targets, aiming to address and resolve marine-related harms caused by human beings, these specified targets cover:

  1. reduce marine pollution;
  2. protect and restore ecosystems;
  3. reduce ocean acidification;
  4. sustainable fishing;
  5. conserve coastal and marine areas;
  6. end subsidies contributing to overfishing;
  7. increase the economic benefits from the sustainable use of marine resources

These topics are important as some of their nature has made the execution process relatively challenging.

That being said, it is important to note that SDG14 is one of the most under-implemented goals with the most reported problems from target 14.6. To put into context, target 14.6 aims to “prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing”, which part of this refers to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This is a misleading fallacy, as subsidies do not necessarily contribute to IUU fishing but to overcapacity. With an ambiguous nature, not only will the planning process be decelerated but also cause countries who put in great effort to lose the credits that they deserve, thus reducing the overall feasibility of implementation.

This SDG goal is often encouraged to be modified for a more convenient future, yet we should not forget how much it has overcome every country and person who is committed to resolving marine challenges, either by funding or executing.
